The quick read

  • For an illustrative parser, ask for handling of a specific input format and explicit behaviour for missing fields.
  • Review correctness, security-relevant behaviour and maintainability before merging.

Start from an existing pattern

Provide the relevant function, tests and surrounding conventions. A short example from the repository can communicate more than a broad instruction to write clean code. Clarify edge cases and what the function must not change.

Use suggestions selectively

For an illustrative parser, ask for handling of a specific input format and explicit behaviour for missing fields. Compare the suggestion with the project’s current error handling and dependency choices. Do not accept a new library simply because the generated code assumes one exists.

Check the consequences

Review correctness, security-relevant behaviour and maintainability before merging. Run checks that exercise the actual requirement, including invalid input where appropriate. Copilot’s available experiences and models vary over time, so consult the current product documentation. The goal is to reduce routine effort while preserving developer judgement. An accepted suggestion should fit the codebase and be understandable to the next maintainer, not just satisfy the immediate prompt.
