The company’s starting point
Character.AI’s introduction identified Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas as its founders. Its product centred on interacting with AI characters. A later company announcement described their return to Google in 2024, so the founding story should not be mistaken for a current management biography.
Conversation as the product
A character-based interface changes the user’s expectations. People may value continuity, tone and responsiveness alongside factual usefulness. Those qualities are not interchangeable with accuracy. A convincing character can still invent information, misunderstand intent or produce an unsuitable response.
The product lesson
For an AI founder, this creates a demanding design question: which parts of an experience should feel expressive, and where should the product clearly explain its limitations? A role-play exercise and an information lookup need different success criteria. Useful evaluation should examine both the immediate response and how the interaction develops over time. Shazeer’s founding chapter illustrates the importance of an experience built around a model, rather than a model presented without context. It also shows why engagement alone cannot stand in for a complete account of product quality or user wellbeing.
