A conversational research lineage
Character.AI’s launch account introduced Daniel De Freitas and Noam Shazeer as co-founders and connected their work to conversational AI research. The company’s 2024 update later described both founders moving to Google. This article focuses on the original product direction.
An unusually broad input space
In a conventional application, a user chooses among defined commands. In open-ended conversation, the next message can change the topic, tone and purpose without warning. Product design therefore includes more than a chat box: it needs ways to establish context, recover from confusion and distinguish invented characters from real authorities.
What builders can learn
Test conversations as sequences, not isolated prompts. A response that looks reasonable alone may contradict an earlier message or intensify a misunderstanding. Include abrupt topic changes, requests for factual information and attempts to push beyond the product’s boundaries. De Freitas’s founding story is a useful entry point to this wider design problem. The ambition of an expressive conversational product brings an equally important responsibility to communicate what the system is and what it cannot reliably know. Public launch materials describe the ambition; independent evaluation is needed to assess the outcome.
