From experiments to infrastructure
Weights & Biases says Lukas Biewald, Chris Van Pelt and Shawn Lewis founded the company in 2017. Its early focus was experiment tracking. The company became part of CoreWeave in May 2025, and its current leadership page lists Biewald as general manager and co-founder.
Why the unglamorous work matters
A model score means little if a team cannot connect it to the code, data and settings that produced it. Experiment tools make those relationships visible. This changes collaboration: a colleague can inspect an unexpected result instead of asking its author to reconstruct a forgotten sequence of steps.
The founder lesson
Biewald’s company offers a case study in building around the work surrounding a model. For a new AI team, the equivalent first step is modest: save the dataset version, prompt, model identifier and evaluation result together. As work expands, permissions, comparisons and monitoring become more valuable. The strategic question is whether the tool reduces uncertainty for the person making the next decision. A beautiful dashboard is useful only when its records lead back to a reproducible experiment or an explainable application failure.
