An editor becomes a work system
Michael Truell co-founded Anysphere, the company behind Cursor. In his February 2026 essay on AI software development, he describes a progression from completion tools toward agents working on longer assignments. The essay is a founder’s account of direction, not an independent forecast of what all software teams will do.
The changing unit of value
A code suggestion is judged in a local context; an agent-produced change must fit a repository, pass relevant checks and remain maintainable. That shift makes task definition, review and coordination part of the product experience. Generating more code is not equivalent to delivering better software.
What to watch
Examine how the tools expose their work, handle failures and support the developer who remains responsible for the result. Measure time to an accepted change rather than raw output. Truell’s founder story is useful because it connects model progress with a changing development interface, while leaving the practical standard where it belongs: software that works and can be owned by a team.
